The Covert Profiler

Happy Birthday, Ewan! So, to celebrate, I thought I would go back and share with you some fun facts about Ewan McGrady, and why I really enjoy working with him. So here they are, in his own words!

1. Ewan was born on the 13th February, 1965.

2. He was raised in the Rhondda Valley, Wales, in an old slate-mining village called Bryn.

3. As a young boy he spent a lot of his time exploring the old abandoned slate quarries in the Rhondda.

4. He was sent to a very strict Catholic School in which he received very little attention from the teacher and was bullied a lot. In one particular year of school he was caught vandalising the school library and was suspended for it. His parents had to pay the fine for him.

5. He left school at 16 and went to London to try to make it as a musician. He first got a job in a factory sewing badges onto cheap woollen jumpers and went out and recorded his first and only album “Peggy Sue and the Pirates”. He sold nearly 4000 copies of that album.

6. At 17 he went to Cardiff University. While at university he formed a band with a friend called “Casper the Shadow”. They played cover versions of mostly American songs and toured with a band called “Dazzle Ships”

7. In his last year of university he quit his job as a labourer at a local factory to move to London to try to make a career as a musician.

8. He hung out in a number of places including the likes of The Chelsea House, The Marquee Club, The Vortex and The Marquee Tavern. These are still some of my favourite places to hang out and listen to music.

9. In 1984 he joined a band called “The Kilbey Band” and recorded a single called “Girl with the Long Brown Hair”. This is the first time I met Ewan as a full-time member of a band. We spent the next five years touring the UK and playing music in pubs and clubs around the country.

10. 1985 was the year we signed our first management deal. We decided to call ourselves The Pogues
